Roughly fifty automobiles have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Law enforcement say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then found numerous other marked cars and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement say early analysis show the liquid was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; officials are not yet informed of any injuries in relation with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the public for tips.
An important representative commented the incident rendered him stunned and required to be resolved quickly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, referring to the death of nine victims by a gunman focusing on people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
